“Watering requires precision”01-02-2012
“The art of cultivating Trachelium is something you have to learn through trial and error", says Jan van Dijk. Together with his partner Bram Bos he owns a horticultural company in Nieuwe Wetering. The two associates grow Trachelium in three colour varieties: white, blue and purple. Cultivation requires extensive knowledge and experience. “Watering alone requires great precision; poorly distributed irrigation leads to an irregular crop", adds Jan. “It is a product of nature, but I consider it a challenge to make the flowers grow evenly.” From seedling to flowerCultivation starts with young plants, grown from seed (obtained from a propagator). It takes between nine and fourteen weeks for the plants to grow into harvestable branches. “It is highly rewarding to see those beautiful clusters on the final crop.” The branches are harvested as soon as a few buds have opened on the flower heads. |
