Trachelium: fascinating clusters

01-02-2012

Countless florets combine to form the flower heads of the Trachelium. From pure white to a deep dark purple.

Trachelium originates from Mediterranean countries. The plants grow to a height of 60 to 100 cm. They blossom with beautiful clusters. It is interesting to take a closer look at one of the flower heads. Only then does it become apparent how many florets it actually contains.

Sky blue

Trachelium caeruleum is also called common throatwort. The name Trachelium derives from the Greek 'trachelos', which means throat, but it may also refer to the Latin 'trachea' (windpipe). In the past, the plant was supposedly used as a powerful remedy for a sore throat. The added qualifier 'caeruleum' means sky blue. Trachelium is available in many shades of blue - from light blue to dark purple - but also in pure white.

Care tips for Trachelium

Trachelium is available all year round. The flower is mainly used for mixed bouquets. For bouquets with Trachelium the usual care tips apply: cut off a section of the stems, remove the lower foliage and place the bouquet in clean water with cut-flower food.
